+ Kuwait National Assembly Elections Dataset (KNAED) [1963-2016]
The Kuwait National Assembly Elections Dataset (KNAED) is a panel dataset that includes every single candidate who ran in any general election for the Kuwait National Assembly (KNA) from 1963 to 2016. The dataset includes a total of 4,514 observations, i.e., candidate-elections, for 2,615 unique individuals across 17 general elections.
From 1963 to 1976, individual candidates competed for votes in 10 multi-member districts (MMD) under a multiple non-transferable vote (MNTV), or block voting, electoral system. The top five candidates with a plurality of votes won seats in the KNA; each citizen was given five votes. In 1981, an Emiri decree expanded the number of electoral districts to 25. Under this block voting system, the top two candidates with a plurality of votes won seats in the KNA; each citizen was given two votes. In 2006, the KNA approved a new electoral law that took effect in 2008. The MNTV system continued, this time with 5 multi-member districts. Under this block voting system, the top ten candidates with a plurality of votes won seats in the KNA. Each citizen was given four votes. In October 2012, an Emiri Decree again modified the electoral law: the five districts remained intact, but each citizen was now limited to a single non-transferable vote (SNTV).
The dataset is based on a separate dataset, the Kuwait Politics Dataset, originally collected by Michael Herb.
